The Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata is a monumental white marble building that serves as both a museum and a symbol of the city's colonial past. Built between 1906 and 1921, it was dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria and is widely considered the finest example of Indo-Saracenic architecture in India.
Victoria Memorial Hall
Overview
Highlights
- The "Taj of the Raj": Often compared to the Taj Mahal, the memorial is constructed of white Makrana marble from the same quarries used for the Taj. It blends British, Mughal, Venetian, Egyptian, and Islamic architectural styles.
- The Angel of Victory: Crowning the central dome is a 16-foot-tall bronze statue of the "Angel of Victory." Mounted on ball bearings, the figure actually rotates with the wind, acting as a giant weather vane.
- The Allegories: Surrounding the central dome are four allegorical sculptures representing Art, Architecture, Justice, and Charity, while the North Porch features figures representing Motherhood, Learning, and Prudence.
- Dimensions: The building stands at a height of 184 feet (56 meters) and is set within 64 acres of meticulously manicured gardens.
