Overview

The Vijay Vilas Palace is a stunning coastal palace located in Mandvi, Kutch (Gujarat). Built in 1929 by Rao Vijayrajji, the heir apparent of Maharaja Khengarji III of Kutch, it serves as the summer residence for the royal family of Kutch. It is widely considered one of the best-preserved palaces in India that still maintains a liveable, "lived-in" royal atmosphere.

Highlights

Architectural Fusion: The palace is a masterpiece of the Rajput style, but it cleverly incorporates elements from across India. You’ll find red sandstone carvings reminiscent of Fatehpur Sikri, Bengali-style curved roofs (Chhatris), and grand Mughal-inspired domes.
The "Filmy" Connection: The palace is a favorite for Bollywood. It gained national fame as the "home" of Aishwarya Rai's character in the blockbuster Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and was also featured prominently in the film Lagaan.
The Umbrella Balcony: The top floor features a breathtaking terrace with marble-arched windows. From here, you can see the royal family's private beach and the Arabian Sea stretching into the horizon.
Exquisite Stone Carvings: The palace is famous for its "Jali" work (stone lattice). These intricate carvings were done by the Mistris of Kutch, a community of master craftsmen known for their precision in stone and wood.
