Overview

The Prinsep Ghat, located on the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, is one of the city's oldest and most photogenic recreational spots. Built in 1841 during the British Raj, it is famous for its massive white Palladian porch and its stunning views of the Vidyasagar Setu (the Second Hooghly Bridge).

Highlights

The Palladian Porch: Designed by W. Fitzgerald, the monument features grand Ionian columns and Greek/Gothic inlays. It was built to honor James Prinsep, a brilliant English scholar and secretary of the Asiatic Society who famously deciphered the ancient Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts of Emperor Ashoka.
The Royal Gateway: In the 19th century, this ghat served as the primary landing point for royal British entourages. High-ranking officials and members of the British royalty would embark and disembark here when arriving in the then-capital of India.
Vidyasagar Setu Backdrop: The monument sits directly "under the shadow" of the majestic cable-stayed Vidyasagar Setu. The contrast between the 19th-century colonial arch and the modern engineering of the bridge makes it a favorite for photographers and filmmakers (notably featured in the Bollywood film Parineeta).
Riverfront Beautification: A 2-km stretch of the riverfront from Prinsep Ghat to Babughat has been landscaped with gardens, fountains, and illuminated pathways, making it a premier spot for evening strolls
