The India Gate, originally called the All India War Memorial, is a majestic 42-meter-high archway located in the heart of New Delhi. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, it is one of the largest war memorials in India and a central pivot of the city's ceremonial axis.
Historical Significance
The Tribute: It commemorates 70,000 Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in World War I (1914–1921) and the Third Anglo-Afghan War.
The Names: The walls of the arch are inscribed with the names of over 13,500 soldiers, including some British officers and servicemen.
The Timeline: The foundation stone was laid in 1921 by the Duke of Connaught, and the monument was dedicated to the nation ten years later, in 1931, by Viceroy Lord Irwin.
