The Red Fort (Lal Qila), a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the definitive symbol of India’s sovereignty and its most iconic Mughal monument. Located in Old Delhi, it served as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors for nearly 200 years after Emperor Shah Jahan moved the capital from Agra to Delhi (Shahjahanabad) in 1638.
Historical Significance
The Seat of Power: Built between 1638 and 1648, the fort represents the pinnacle of Mughal creativity.
Symbol of Independence: Every year on August 15th, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag at the Lahori Gate and delivers a speech to the nation—a tradition started by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947.
The Trial of a Dynasty: It was here that the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was tried by the British after the 1857 uprising, marking the end of the Mughal Empire.
