Overview

The Mahabat Maqbara (and the adjacent Bahauddin Makbara) in Junagadh, Gujarat, is often described as one of India’s most "otherworldly" monuments. Built in the late 19th century, this funerary complex is a breathtaking example of Indo-Islamic and European Gothic fusion, looking like something plucked straight out of a dark fantasy novel.

Highlights

The "Taj Mahal" of Gujarat: While the Taj Mahal is known for its symmetry and white marble, the Mahabat Maqbara is celebrated for its verticality, yellow tint, and "hauntingly beautiful" ornate carvings.
Architectural Mashup: It is a rare example of Euro-Indo-Islamic style. You will see Gothic arches and French windows sitting alongside Islamic domes and traditional Hindu-style stone carvings.
The Spiral Minarets: The most iconic feature of the complex is the four minarets surrounding the Bahauddin Makbara. Each minaret has external spiral staircases wrapping around them, a design element rarely seen anywhere else in the world.
Intricate Stone Lace: The masonry is so delicate it is often compared to lace. Every inch of the exterior is covered in floral motifs, stone chains, and geometric patterns.
